Makers Innovation Award – The winner teams!

After the Idea Cultivation Workshop, where project ideas were refined and new contacts were made among like-minded people in the maker community, the deadline for submitting projects was February 11th. 25 excellent ideas aiming at social cohesion and reconstruction of Ukraine were received. 14 most promising ideas were further selected by jury members and the organizations received an invitation to the pitch event on March 1st! It wasn't an easy decision for jury members, but eight best ideas were announced on Friday evening.

“Molodizhni Vitryla” with the project “Vitryla Maker Space”: Given the lack of available spaces for the development of technical skills and extracurricular education of young people, the project aims to increase the interest of young people in technical sciences, to link attention to the local maker community and promote the development of entrepreneurship and innovation by opening, equipping and training a woodworking workshop for people aged 12 to 18 years, aligned with the local economy and the strategic priorities of the community.

“Molod’ Online” with the Skin Open Source (SOS) project. The identified problem lies in financial and information barriers to access to biotechnology education and research in Ukraine, which in turn leads to inequality in access to advanced technologies and prevents opportunities to improve the quality of education. The project aims to cheapen and disseminate biotechnologies, applying the principles of “do-it-yourself biology” and “citizen science”, especially attracting

young people to the DIY biotech movement, where manufacturers and the scientific community work together in a synergy.

“Eko misto Chernihiv” with the project “Plastic Fantastic LAB”. It is an interdisciplinary maker initiative that aims to promote the development of engineering, design and art communities to address the global problem of plastic pollution using the example of two local workshops in Chernihiv and Kiev. The goal is its own production of plastic processing equipment, expanding the geography of plastic processing workshops, and promoting sorting, recycling and production in Ukraine.

“Kolo” with the project “Galician Makers: a new narrative of vocational training”. Since education is one of the areas in Ukraine most affected by the war, the aim of the project is to set up two workshops based on Fablab approaches, where experience and expertise in educational institutions through training and

workshops teach project thinking and project skills as well as engineering thinking. The project is intended to contribute to increasing the capacities of two professional and technical institutions and thus have a positive impact on reconstruction in Ukraine.

“It’s Craft” with the project “Mythologization and modernization of the Tripillia culture” aims to create a large circle of like-minded people who, through synergies, will implement the idea of a renewed Ukrainian identity based on the Tripillia culture in different ways. The project is intended to not only aim at unification, but also promote the development of creative industries and contribute to the mental health of the population.

CultGroup” with the project “STR Lab Polytechnic – a laboratory for sustainable recycling technologies”. For the reconstruction there will be a need for recovery engineers and technical specialists who are familiar with the reuse of materials, the circular economy, recycling and materials science. And since it is not yet offered at universities, the project aims to set up a laboratory for research into sustainable recycling technologies, where students from related disciplines can gain practical experience in using digital production tools using the example of designing industrial processes for recycling, mechanical engineering and chemical technology, polymer processing, computer automation.

“HackLab” with the “HackLab 2.0” project. Given the critical shortage in Ukraine of engineers, locksmiths, mechanics and specialists, also because graduates of universities and vocational educational institutions do not have sufficient practical experience, the goal of the project is to create an inclusive workshop where creative enthusiasts developing startups have a space for experiments and rapid prototyping and can quickly acquire practical skills for working with modern equipment.

“Noyiv Kurin” with the project “Filament Production Boost”. There is a shortage of filaments, which is important for 3D printing, filament is currently being imported, but the current situation forces to create conditions for the development of existing companies and for this there is a need for knowledge centers for filament production and its modifications and development of related technologies such as different types of plastic, secondary and primary plastic as well as skills of makers and companies.

Congratulations to all winners and finalists!
